Joel Speck

Obituary of Joel John Speck

“So It Goes” - Kurt Vonnegut

Joel John Speck, 75-years-old, of Greeley, Colorado, died at home of natural causes on February 29, 2024.

He was born in Grand Island, Nebraska in 1948 to Clarence & Lydia Speck. Joel attended The University of Nebraska where he majored in English. Joel joined the Army and after being honorably discharged spent a great portion of his working career as a Rural Carrier. As a lover of photography, he published photos for Rocky Mountain Spirit Magazine, and shared his photos with those closest to him.

Joel was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Beckie and brother Gary, and is survived by his wife, Laurie Speck, children Jodi Speck, Matthew & Meghan Hillesland, and Tracey & Sean Brookover, his grandchildren Jayson, Justyn and Joanna Bomar, Averleigh, Cora and Carson Hillesland, and Harper Brookover, and his loving pets Raven and Sparkey.

Joel greatly loved his family and those close to him. Throughout his life, Joel cultivated a massive collection of books and music; you could always catch him listening to his favorite music station or record, or sitting quietly in his chair cozied up with a good book. His love for being outside was shown anytime the sun peaked out from the clouds where he spent his spring, summer and fall in his finely tuned garden, on walks with Laurie and Raven near the Poudre Trail, traveling to various states viewing all the marvelous creations this earth has to see, and helping his family with whatever project they had for him where he bestowed his great knowledge and patient teaching. Joel was the greatest Husband, Father and Grandfather anyone could have hoped to have and he will be dearly missed by countless individuals who had the good fortune of knowing him.

While no public services will be had, Joel would have appreciated donations made to NOCO Humane at nocohumane.org
