Obituary of Michael Dewayne Gates

On February 28, 2023, Michael Gates died unexpectedly in Evans, Colorado at the age of 40.

Mike (Myko/MG) was born on December 13, 1982, in Forrest City, Arkansas to Earnest Ray Washington and Lorene Gates. He grew up in Oakland, California with his mother and two siblings, LaTasha and Dale, having fun with neighborhood friends, making music and playing basketball. He graduated from Pinole Valley High School in Pinole, California in 2001 and went on to attend Fresno State University where he played basketball for the Bulldogs and graduated in 2005 with a degree in Communications.

Music was a lifelong passion for Mike, and he produced and wrote many songs over the years. He relished in serving his Lord Jesus Christ by helping his neighbors and the homeless with random acts of kindness. He found many friends at the Victory Christian Fellowship church in Greeley, Colorado where he led or assisted with various activities including landscaping and audio/visual production.

Mike leaves behind his parents Earnest Ray Washington of Chicago, Illinois and Lorene Gates of Evans, Colorado; his children, Michael, Jr., Elliot, Mayani and Manyia; siblings LaTasha Gates of West Memphis, Arkansas and Dale Gates of Windsor, Colorado; beloved nieces and nephews; and countless friends and acquaintances.
