Obituary of Candy Lynn Schackel

Candy Schackel, 60, of Pierce, Colorado, died with family by her side on October 17, 2022, in Greeley, Colorado.

Cancer Sucks.

Candy was born in Lebanon, Oregon to Janice Miller on August 16, 1962.  For the first five years, she was raised by her grandparents, Tom & Emily Miller.  In 1967, Janice married Peter Fitzpatrick, who adopted Candy.  On June 29, 1997, in Newport, Oregon, Candy married the love of her life, Nathan Schackel.

Candy is survived by her loving husband; children, Aaron Woody, Desiree (Jacob) Woody, and Julianna Schackel; granddaughter, Giavanna Schackel; siblings, Rachel (Kevin) Bishop, and Peter Fitzpatrick; fur-babies, Bootsy Collins, Bonnie Raitt, and Bella Luna; and a large loving extended family.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Aunt, Ruby Barnes; and Cousin, Gerry Barnes.

She loved working with her hands and her home was filled with things she had made and collected. From stained glass pieces in her windows to fused glass objects on her shelves and walls. She also made many quilts and loved to crochet. She sewed face masks during the pandemic.

Camping was another passion of hers and she and Nathan were frequently gone on summer and fall weekends visiting state and national parks in their RV.

Her favorite musicals were Les Miserables, Hamilton and Phantom of the Opera. She and Nathan had an annual subscription to shows at the DCPA.

She was also a member of the Denver Art Museum, the Denver Zoo, and the Museum of Nature and Science.

She loved Pink Floyd, flamingos, the Colorado Rockies, rescue animals, and having her husband sing to her in the car.

She had a drink named after her at her favorite distillery.

She was a fighter for social justice including world hunger, the Wild Animal Sanctuary and Planned Parenthood. She was proud of being a founding member of The Wild Animal Refuge in Springfield, Co.

Candy and Nathan did fifteen Bolder Boulders together until the years caught up to them.
