Obituary of Richard Brian Koon

Richard (Rich) Brian Koon, age 54, passed away on Friday, March 4, 2022, after a tough battle with colon cancer. Rich was a loving husband, father, son, brother, son-in-law, and friend. Rich was born on October 29, 1967, in Greenbay, Wisconsin, raised by William Koon and Dorothy (Sue) Smith. Rich married the love of his life, Christine, on July 20, 1991.

 

Rich was a dedicated husband. He met his wife Christine through mutual friends in Greeley, Colorado. Several years after meeting they moved to Guernsey, Wyoming where they spent the first few years of marriage before moving back to Colorado, after the birth of their daughter Katelin. While living in Guernsey Rich went to trade school and began his career in HVAC. His fondness for camping, golfing, and boating began in Guernsey.

 

Rich’s greatest joy in life was his daughter Katelin. He loved watching her grow in swimming, volleyball, and academics. Rich and Katelin loved to challenge each other as they both were very competitive. He was so proud of her and all her accomplishments. His most proud day was the day she married Zachary Smith.

 

Rich loved guns and shooting! He was not much of a talker unless you got him talking about guns.  He was an avid Colorado Eagles hockey fan and loved to attend the games with his family. On Friday and Saturday nights in the summer you could find him playing cornhole and barbecuing with his friends and neighbors. Rich was beginning to enjoy traveling and loved to camp and 4 wheel with his Jeep.

 

Rich is remembered by his wife Christine, daughter Katelin Smith, son-in-law Zachary Smith; mother Dorothy (Sue) Smith, brother Donald (Lori) Koon, grandmother Dorothy Johnson, parents-in-law Carl and Claudia Barteck, brother-in-law Scott (Connie) Barteck, daughter, through a foreign exchange program, Gaia Grimoldi (and her family); nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends.

 

He was preceded in death by his father William Koon, stepdad Warren Smith, grandfather Franklin (Johnny) Johnson, and nephew Michael Koon.
