Obituary of Loran Tracy Clement

Loran Tracy Clement, MD, passed away on Saturday, November 27, 2021, at Poudre Valley Hospital. He was 75 years old. Loran was born in Kansas City, MO, on August 3, 1946, the oldest child of two lifelong educators, L. Tracy Clement and Trenna (Goodwin) Clement. When he was a young adolescent, his family moved to Edison, NE, and then to Lincoln, NE, where Loran attended and graduated from Lincoln High School. During his youth, he enjoyed playing sports, music, and he excelled in academics. Loran went on to attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, the University of Nebraska at Omaha Medical School, and he completed Residencies at Johns Hopkins University and University of California at San Francisco. He was Board Certified in Pediatrics and in Allergy and Immunology. A brilliant researcher and scientist, Loran authored and co-authored a large body of publications, secured multiple grants, and contributed to many research studies. Loran enjoyed a fulfilling medical and academic career, primarily in California and Alabama. He never lost sight of the importance of addressing disparities in healthcare. During his time working in California, he developed a Breathmobile Program, which provided mobile, school-based clinics made up of asthma care specialists who provided ongoing care to children in urban Los Angeles. This novel and award-winning program served thousands of underserved, under-resourced youth, helping them gain control of their asthma symptoms. Loran also developed an extensive interest in technology and developed an Electronic Health Record system which he made available to other institutions at no cost. Loran’s last formal position was at the University of South Alabama, where he served as Chair for the Pediatrics Department. After retirement, he moved to Fort Collins, CO, where he worked part time at Allergy Partners of Northern Colorado and taught Accelerated Anatomy and Physiology and Biology at Front Range Community College. He loved teaching and was popular with his students and colleagues. This year, he was awarded the Natural Sciences Department’s Outstanding Adjunct of the Year. Loran enjoyed talking about politics, social issues, sports (especially Nebraska football), music, science, and genealogy among many other things. A lifelong learner, he continued to enjoy learning new things and readily shared his enthusiasm with others. Loran was a generous father and grandfather. He was a coach, makeshift tutor, editor and reviewer of schoolwork, and an invested touchstone for his children and grandchildren. He proudly shared family accomplishments and news and was a champion for everyone he cared about and loved. He is survived by his 6 children, Todd (Elyse), of Bowling Green, KY; Andrea (Brent), of Fort Collins, CO; Brett, of Rancho Cucamonga, CA; Ryan (Anna), of McKinney, TX; Mitch, of Moorpark, CA; and Kevin, of Fort Collins, CO. He is additionally survived by 8 grandchildren, Tyler, Breanne (James), Jennifer (Sean), Hayley, Caleb, Brayden, Emily, and Abby. One new grandchild will be arriving any day. He is also survived by his sister, Mary (Ray) Kahler; cousin, Gordon Goodwin; aunt, Alice Goodwin; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, James. The family would like to thank the exceptional staff members at Poudre Valley Hospital and Pathways Hospice for their excellent care and support during Loran’s final days-this care will never be forgotten.
